The Sabourin Family / La Famille Sabourin
La Famille Sabourin shares a founding date with the United States of America. This cuvée celebrates our roots and the enduring friendship between our two countries.
In 1776, while America declared its Independence, Monsieur Dupré de Saint-Maur, Intendant of Guyenne (a role comparable to today’s Prefect of Gironde), commissioned the Bordeaux brokers to classify the wines of the region. That same year, the Sabourin family’s Cru Le Moyne was ranked among the Medoc’s finest, alongside its neighbor La Lagune. By the late 19th century, the family owned an estate in the Blaye area, one of the first to bottle its wines at a time when most were still sold in barrels. In 1905, a gravity-fed vat room was built in Cars, near Blaye — one of the most modern facilities of its era.
In 2016, Alexis Sabourin and his mother Héléna founded La Maison Girondine within the family’s historic cellar in Cars. Some of their ancestors once presided over prestigious Bordeaux names such as Issan (Margaux) and Cheval Blanc (Saint-Émilion), where M. Fourcaud-Laussac drained the soils and boldly established Cabernet Franc as the dominant varietal, against the practices of his time.
This innovative spirit has always been at the heart of Bordeaux’s Grands Crus, shaping the world of wine for over three centuries.
The Vineyard
“1776 Tradition” is crafted in partnership with Château de La Grave, located in the Côtes de Bourg appellation — an area renowned for wines such as Roc de Cambes from the Mitjaville family (Tertre Roteboeuf in Saint-Émilion).
Nestled in the commune of Bourg, among the finest slopes of the appellation, Château de La Grave is to us the jewel of the Côtes de Bourg. Dominated by its authentic medieval castle, the estate was once home to the governors of Bourg.
Owned by the Bassereau family for over a century, the vineyard has been under the talented care of Philippe Bassereau since 1990.
In 2020, the estate embraced organic viticulture, with biodynamic farming as the ultimate goal.
“1776 Innovation”: True to the Reputation of the 2020 Vintage
A solar vintage marked by intense heat, the excellent 2020 heralded the birth of this cuvée, the entry point to our new 1776 range. The blend is built on a Merlot base, reinforced by a significant share of Cabernet Sauvignon, combining the elegance and power of these two grape varieties. Twelve months of aging in French oak barrels give the wine greater depth and complexity. Pleasurable in its youth, it also offers fine aging potential.
With “1776 Innovation”, La Famille Sabourin presents one of the finest wines of the Côtes de Bourg appellation.
